Chapter Eighteen

“He’s been here, more than once, but he must have a car or some kind of transport because we lose his scent the moment we get to the end of the road.” Dimitri plonked himself down on Trent’s couch apparently unconcerned he was only wearing a pair of sweat bottoms. He and Shane shifted forms as soon as the street went quiet, picking up the scent from the wall under the window frame in Trent’s room, and tracking it away from the house.

“What do you mean; he’s been here more than once? Wouldn’t that have just been his loitering about making sure Trent was on his own before climbing the wall? He’s been shot; he still had bullets in him when he left. He should be lying low and healing somewhere.” Alexi had been relaxed enough before, but with Shane and Dimitri not finding Levi, and Mace and Roan arriving to confirm there were indeed other murders in other states, and they fit the timeline of Levi’s visits, he’d gotten closer and closer to Trent to the point where Trent was almost on his lap. While Trent appreciated the concern, he was a grown man, more than capable of sitting by himself. But when he tried to move away, he caught hurt through their bond, with a strong dash of possessiveness and stayed where he was.

“The scent strength is different,” It was Shane who bothered to answer Alexi’s curt question. “He’s been here at least three times in the last twenty-four hours. I guess he’s trying to catch Trent on his own.”

“Fucking bastard. I’ll kill him.” This time Trent was hauled onto Alexi’s lap and while he felt like an idiot perched on someone’s knee, he didn’t move away. Instead he slung an arm around Alexi’s shoulder and focused on his friends instead.

“I don’t know why he wants me so bad, but surely this is a good thing?” He said, trying not to let his nerves get away from him. “We can trap him here.”

“He’s not likely to come around while you’ve got vampires of your own protecting you,” Dimitri said. “He’s hungry, not stupid.”

“Has Levi got a thing about guys you’ve been with before? Apart from Buzz?” Trent didn’t want to ask his mate about former lovers, but something about Levi’s behavior wasn’t making sense.

Alexi’s lip tightened but he answered. “Not that I’m aware of, but when I had relationships before him, Levi wasn’t around as much, and I haven’t bothered with more than one-night stands since coming to Stockton. I know he’s hassled Josephine more than once, and he tried to do a number on Patrice when he hunted us down here and found Carlos was mated.”

“What happened?” Shane asked. “I know Patrice is human and I presume Josephine is as well?”

“Vampires only mate with humans. I’ve never heard of any other types of pairings.” His tone suggested Alexi wasn’t keen on answering questions and Trent wondered why vampires and shifters seemed so edgy around each other. That’s not going to make my mated life any easier.
